Are blackberries the new blueberries?

Maybe not, but research touting the health benefits of blackberries is grabbing headlines these days. Turns out that the berries are high in cancer-fighting antioxidants, fiber and Vitamin C – and we already know they taste pretty darn good in cobblers, jams and fresh off the cane.

Here’s some more fun facts about blackberries:

  • Harvest time typically runs June-August, but new varieties of fall-bearing blackberries allow harvests to continue through September – potentially boosting consumption and demand.
  • Blackberries are considered a “bramble” crop, so named for the thorns that cover many varieties of the plants.
  • The ideal temperature for blackberry production is between 80 and 85 degrees.
  • The blackberry plant is called a “cane.”
  • Blackberries are a great source of nutrients, including of dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K and manganese.
