Here at the Farm Flavor office, we’re big supporters of youth organizations such as FFA, 4-H and the Girl Scouts. In fact, the three of us who comprise the Farm Flavor content team were all Girl Scouts ourselves… though some of us made it a bit further than others (Ambassador, Junior and, um, Brownie). We’re also fortunate enough to have a fellow editor peddling Girl Scout cookies on behalf of his daughter, so our pantries (and freezers) are freshly stocked with Samoas, Tagalongs and Thin Mints (or if you’re from, say, Kentucky: Caramel DeLites, Peanut Butter Patties and Thin Mints).
Now, I’m a Pinterestaholic, so I’ve seen plenty of pins ranging from how to make homemade Girl Scout cookies to pie charts of the most popular Girl Scout cookies to all the terrifying stats about the nutritional info (I eat them once a year, in moderation, so I don’t want to hear it!). However, today I just came across the strangest concept… savory meals made with Girl Scout cookies.
Not just a concept, but a recipe contest – run by the Girl Scouts of Western Washington.
Sure, some of these finalists are more traditional, with some sort of Tagalong cheesecake cupcake and a frozen tart using Savannah Smiles (yeah, I’d never heard of those either, but they’re new), but the savory recipes were the ones that caught my attention.
Girl Scout Lemon Cookie & Shrimp Ravioli – look, I’m a pasta enthusiast, but I just don’t know. I’m personally not a lemon cookie fan, so I’m not sure if I’d enjoy them crushed and stuffed inside of ravioli with some ricotta and shrimp… On the other hand, lemon does go well with shrimp so… maybe?
Samoa Curry Arancini – okay, as weird as the ravioli sounds, this goes one step further. Curry powder is quite possibly the last thing I’d ever associate with Girl Scout cookies, but then again, Samoas do have coconut. Coconut milk does seem like a no-brainer, but this one does seem pretty creative. Chicken, Greek yogurt, mint, basil… okay, all of that sounds delicious. I think it’s just the chocolate and caramel that’s throwing me off.
Samoa Chicken Tenders and Noodle Salad – again with the Samoas, which I consider proof that taste buds do evolve over time. Disliked them as a Brownie, but adore them now, some 20 years later (still a close second to my lifelong love, Tagalongs). So, why not crush them up with some almonds, bread crumbs and spices and coat some chicken tenders with the mixture?
On the other hand, as intriguing and incredibly creative as each of these recipes sound, they do seem like a bit of an odd way to use up these valuable, once-a-year treats. I think I’ll stick to enjoying Girl Scout cookies on their own.
