Ingredients
- ½ cup shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 cups cake or pastry flour
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 cup milk
- 3 squares Baker’s chocolate
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Hard Sauce
- ⅓ cup butter or margarine
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, cream shortening and add sugar gradually. Add beaten egg and mix well.
- Sift together flour, salt and baking powder. Add flour mixture gradually, alternating with milk.
- Melt chocolate and add to the bowl. Add vanilla and mix well.
- Pour chocolate mixture into small, greased molds, and cover with lids or foil. On your stovetop, fill a saucepan with 1 inch of hot water. Place molds inside the pan on a wire rack, bring to a gentle boil, and steam for 1 ½ hours or until top springs back. Add water to pan as needed.
- To make Hard Sauce, cream the butter until it’s very soft, then add powdered sugar gradually and beat until light and fluffy. Add vanilla. Chill while pudding steams. Drizzle over hot steamed pudding just before serving.
