Going to the Farmers’ Market in Florida

Eating local produce is easier than ever, thanks to the numerous farmers’ markets located across Florida. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) estimates that there are more than 125 local farmers’ markets throughout the state, based on those that have registered with the agency. Each farmers’ market operates independently, so days and hours of operation may vary, but most sell delicious Florida produce, flowers and value-added agriculture products (jams, jellies and sauces).

But have you ever thought about the process required to get local Florida fruits and vegetables into your grocery stores and the kitchens of your favorite restaurants? FDACS operates 13 state farmers’ markets, which offer grower services including produce refrigeration, truck scales, packing houses and more facilities to assist local producers with selling larger quantities to grocery stores and restaurants. More than 25 million units of fresh produce are sold annually to distributors through the markets.
