Maine Agriculture

Agriculture and natural resources play an important role in Maine’s economy. Livestock products, such as chicken eggs and milk, draw the most agricultural revenue. The state leads the nation in wild blueberry production and ranks among the top states for maple syrup, but potatoes lead the way as the largest crop growing in the state’s rich soil. An aquaculture industry thrives, too, thanks to the state’s 5,300-mile coastline of clean water and abundance of freshwater – the most of any state east of the Mississippi River. Farmers raise salmon, trout, baitfish, scallops, clams and much more in marine grow-out farms, marine hatcheries and freshwater hatcheries.

There is a strong sustainable agriculture community alive in the Pine Tree State, and many farmers engage in sustainable farming methods. A diverse organic farming community is present as well.
