1. Broilers –Virginia broilers (chickens used for meat) generated $649 million in 2012 and were the No. 1 agriculture commodity.

2. Cattle and calves – Cattle and calves earned $434 million in 2012.

3. Milk – The No. 3 commodity in Virginia produced $358 million in cash receipts in 2012.

4. Turkeys – Virginia ranked No. 7 in the nation for turkey production and earned $324 million in 2012.

5. Soybeans – Soybeans generated $302 million in 2012 and was the No. 1 ag export in the state.

6. Greenhouse/Nursery/Sod/Turfgrass – This diverse category generated $272 million and accounted for almost 8 percent of agricultural cash receipts in 2012.

7. Corn – Primarily grown for grain, corn generated $212 million in 2012.

8. Hay – Hay production earned $123 million in cash receipts in 2012. Some varieties are Alfalfa, Mixed Grass, Timothy and Orchardgrass.

9. Wheat – Wheat earned $109 million in 2012.

10. Tobacco – The No. 10 commodity earned $109 million in 2012.
