Ingredients

Supplies:

  • 1 liter-size glass jar with lid
  • 1 gift tag (for baking instructions)
  • Decorative string or ribbon

Jar Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar

Additional Baking Ingredients:

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt. Pour mixture into the jar to create the first layer. Use your hands to pack it down a bit.
  2. Add chocolate chips to the jar to create second layer.
  3. Add brown sugar then granulated sugar to the jar to create the third and fourth layers. Use your hands to pack the layers down if needed.
  4. Place an airtight lid on the jar. On the gift tag, write the following instructions for the recipient: Preheat oven to 375 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Mix together 1 stick unsalted butter (room temperature), 2 eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Add jar contents and continue mixing until dough comes together. Form into 1- to 2-tablespoon-size balls and place about 2 inches apart on baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until edges are slightly browned. Let cool slightly on baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  5. Attach gift tag to jar using decorative ribbon or string.
