Wisconsin Agriculture Top Ten

1. Dairy Products – Wisconsin ranks first in the nation in cheese production and second in the nation in milk production. As America’s Dairyland, the state produced 27.6 billion pounds of milk in 2013 earning more than $5.2 billion.

2. Corn – The state harvested 445 million bushels of corn in 2013. Silage production was 16.2 million tons. Combined, the state’s corn crop generated more than $2.2 billion in cash receipts.

3. Cattle and calves – As of Jan. 1, 2014, all cattle and calves in Wisconsin totaled 3.35 million head, including beef cows, milk cows, heifers, steers, bulls and calves. The total cash receipts of the state’s cattle and calves topped $1.2 billion in 2013.

4. Soybeans – Wisconsin farmers harvested soybeans on 1.55 million acres in 2013, producing 58.9 million bushels of soybeans. Soybean production in 2013 generated $908.5 million in cash receipts.

5. Potatoes – In 2013, Wisconsin farmers harvested 62,000 acres of potatoes, producing 27.3 million hundredweight (cwt) per acre and generating almost $250 million in cash receipts.

6. Greenhouse and nursery – In 2012, Wisconsin’s cash receipts from the greenhouse and nursery industry totaled $241.8 million. This figure includes Wisconsin’s Christmas tree growers.

7. Cranberries – Wisconsin farmers harvested more than 6 million barrels of cranberries in 2013, the highest production on record for the crop. The state is still the No. 1 cranberry producer in the U.S.

8. Wheat – In 2013, Wisconsin harvested 15.4 million bushels of wheat grown on 265,000 acres. The crop earned $141.4 million in cash receipts. The predominant variety grown in Wisconsin is soft red winter wheat.

9. Hogs – As of Dec. 1, 2013, Wisconsin’s hog and pig inventory was 305,000 head. The annual pig crop was 809,000 head, from December 2012 to November 2013. Gross earnings were more than $133 million.

10. Broilers – Wisconsin produced 51.7 million broilers in 2012, ranking the state 19th in the nation. The state broiler industry generated more than $108 million in cash receipts.
