1. Chrysanthemums

Affectionately known as mums, these beloved fall flowers are essential in any autumn garden or front porch display. They’re often grown in zones 5 through 9, appear in a wide range of colors such as white, lavender, red, yellow, orange and purple, and thrive in well-drained, rich soil. Because their roots are shallow and they come in such warm and bright colors, they make fantastic additions to buckets, pots and other decorative containers in the fall.

If you purchase these for your garden, make sure you’re buying garden mums. Florist mums are exclusively meant for indoor pots and won’t do well when planted outdoors.
